What does Coochiemudlo mean?
The name “Coochiemudlo” has the Aboriginal meaning of “red rock”, which is due to a steep bank of red cliffs on the south western corner of the island.
This feature is uncharacteristic of the rest of the island, which is fringed with sandy beaches and blue waters.
Some of the local craftspeople use the red ochre from the rock to create unique art works.
Coochiemudlo’s peaceful atmosphere and stunning views have inspired many artists, and a range of arts and crafts are displayed at the Coochie Craft Markets, held on a regular basis.
Many of these artworks can also be found on display at one of the island’s galleries.
History of Coochiemudlo Island
Nearly 200 years ago, explorer Matthew Flinders landed on Coochiemudlo Island and this historic event is celebrated each July with a re-enactment of the landing and a fun day.
The island is small enough to walk or cycle around, and is a delight to explore.
A great way to see the island is by taking a short bus tour where a local driver will show you the main points of interest and share some tall tales.
The waters surrounding Coochiemudlo could be described as an aquatic playground.
The area is popular for windsurfing, sailing, swimming and paddle boats.
You may be lucky enough to spot a dolphin, dugong or turtle in the shallow waters near the beach.
Wetlands occupy a large portion of the north-eastern part of the island, where a Melaleuca swamp and open woodland can be found.
Things to Do
This area supports a variety of birdlife including migratory species and is a perfect place to explore the flora and fauna of the island.

Staying on the island is easy. There is a range of accommodation including modest bungalows, holiday homes and resort-style units. Coochiemudlo Island also has bed and breakfast accommodation.
Getting in
Getting to the island is easy. A passenger ferry and vehicle barge service operates from Victoria Point every half hour, seven days a week.
There are also limited services departing from Cleveland. Once you get to the island, Coochie Bus Service will take you where you want to go.
After all your exploring, relax over a meal at the island’s Melanesian-style restaurant, or the cafe which offers lovely Moreton Bay views.
If you are looking for something a little more casual, there is also a kiosk which can supply you with everything you need for a picnic on the beach. If you are staying for a while, you also can pick up general supplies at the kiosk.
